“Donations that make a Difference throughout the Nation”
Richard Marvin DeVos, Jr. was born on October 21, 1955. He comes from “money” as it is often said when referring to the rich people of the world. I think perhaps what sets Dick apart from others in his social class, is the fact that he gives with the intention of making a profound difference in the lives of the many people who are not as fortunate as he. Perhaps this is an inherited trait, as he is the son of magnate Richard DeVos (co-founder of Amway), who along with his wife, is extremely generous in donations as well. I would have to say Dick DeVos comes from “good blood” rather than saying he comes from money.
In 2014, The Dick and Betsy DeVos Foundation donated, along with the other four Devos families foundations an astounding 94 million dollars to various organizations and charities. More than half of that 94 million stayed in West Michigan. Dick DeVos and his wife Betsy donated 22.5 million dollars in 2010 to fund the efforts of Michael Kaiser’s non-profit organization that is now called The Devos Institute For the Arts Management at University of Maryland. This organization performs work in 82 different countries. Dick and his wife specifically asked Kaiser to keep a percent of their donation in Grand Rapids, affording local arts organizations such as the Grand Rapids Symphony and the Grand Rapids Ballet the needed funds for their growth.
The DeVos seem to have a unique understanding of the relationship between family and unity and community. When there is prosperity in one home and that family is willing to donate to the community, there will be prosperity in the community. When there is prosperity in the community and the members are willing to give, there will be prosperity in the State. When there is prosperity in the State and the people are willing to give, there will be prosperity in the Nation.
Richard Marvin DeVos, Jr. has a goal with his donations, as a family, and as a separate foundation with his wife; the fingers of each donation touch the lives of many people, not only in the State of Michigan but throughout the world.
